The best tracks and trip ideas are kept secret though, because locals are protective of their favourite spots and National Parks rangers do not encourage visitors.

For this reason, most national parks in North Queensland are neglected by tourists except for the few areas accessible to bogans in their four wheel drives. This means the best views, creeks, campsites, scenery and wildlife encounter opportunities are exclusively available to you and your friends if you wish, without camping or access fees.On the other hand, the management neglect and tropical environment results in hostile conditions, especially for those who are fat, un-acclimatised or have inflexible or bad bushwalking skills.

Even experienced walkers from the southern states or overseas will certainly experience some form of suffering during a walk in the rainforests of North Queensland. But a quick read of this book should prepare you for most situations and help avoid the nastiest of rainforest inconveniences.Bushwalking the wet tropics is excellent in its own right, but don’t forget that such walks also give opportunities for other activities.

There are numerous granite peaks for rock climbing, many never climbed before. You can fish reaches of streams unvisited by other anglers. There are historical artifacts from abandoned mines to plane wrecks. Twitching and wildlife viewing opportunities are endless. The first few sections of this book give some advice about walking in the wet tropics, this is followed by track notes for nine walks of varying length and difficulty, including multi-day trips.

The majority of these walks are not listed in any other bushwalking guide book or website. This book gives the coordinates for the start of these walks, which are difficult to find even if you are aware of the general location. The advice and walks presented here are aimed for people with bushwalking experience. There already exists a book on walking in the wet tropics for beginners which covers simple walks in the area (Tropical walking tracks of North Queensland by Kym Dungey & Jane Whytlaw).

This is a good book, especially if you are new to walking or the wet tropics but most of the trails in the book suffer from over use as they were previously the only accessible trails in the area. You should try some of the bushwalks covered in that book, which are all relatively short and easy, before attempting any harder walks in the area. You will then be ready for the more adventurous and better walks presented in my book. Keep in mind that I describe some walks I have done and loved in the past, but conditions and management change. You will enjoy your travels more if you are independent and resilient enough to deal with any adverse circumstances which appear.

The condition of any trails I mention in this book could deteriorate at any time. Most trails will be difficult to follow if you are the first walker after a wet season.Includes track notes for: Mt Pieter Botte, Thornton Peak, Mossman Bluff, Cross Daintree traverses, Black Mountain, Mt Williams, Cedar Bay, Devils Thumb. If you notice any errors or can make any suggestions please put them in a review so everyone can see.

Enjoy!
